Dog Collars Made From Hemp
What is Hemp and why should we use it in making dog collars? Hemp the fibers and the plant is the solution to many of the problems that are facing the modern world: deforestation, acid rain, the greenhouse effect, erosion, pollutants, starvation, and limited fossil fuels. Hemp production could provide jobs and increased revenues to our rural areas.
Hemp is grown free from pesticide and herbicides, hemp hypoallergenic and 100% biodegradable. Hemp is longer, stronger, more resilient and more absorbent, and more insolative than cotton fibers. Anything and I mean anything that can be made out of wood or plastic can be made with hemp. Farming only 6% of the United States with hemp could produce enough energy to end America’s dependence on fossil fuels! Sounding good?
There are several styles varieties and types of dog collars made from hemp to choose from. A hemp dog collar is an essential piece of gear for any dog owner. It is the place to attach your dog’s ID tags, and is helpful in handling the dog should the need arise. Properly fitting the collar is important, as an improperly sized dog collar is of no benefit to either the owner, the dog, or other pets.
Measure your dog’s neck with a soft tape measure if you have one to estimate the collar size. Hold the tape in the middle of your dog’s neck and measure the around the thickest part of the neck from that point. Add 2″ to the result so you can purchase a hemp collar that is big enough to adjust. especially if your puppy is till growing.
Place the hemp collar around the dog’s neck. The collar should be wide enough to be comfortable, but not so thick that the hemp will press into the neck while the dog performs everyday tasks like eating or drinking.
Hemp dog collars can be naturally dyed and are made from one of nature’s strongest fabrics to hold up to the roughest pets. Adjustable dog collars ensures optimal comfort of your puppy as he or she grows to adulthood.
Snaps and buckles can be made from stainless steel which means optimal corrosion resistance and smooth action, or strong plastics also are also weather resistant.
There are hemp dog harness available also which should be fully adjustable, totally durable and fleece-lined for comfort. For correct size, measure around the fullest part of the dogs chest area. Look for chrome or plastic hardware for snaps. Dog harnesses can be used with a car seat belt for safety when traveling, but be sure to check with manufacture directions. Most should be machine washable and air dry for easy care.

Choke Collars – Beneficial Or Harmful
A controversial topic which always gets dog owners emotions going is the use of choke collars. The views are all over the map when it comes to the advantages and disadvantages of the use of choke collars. Many dog owners encourage the use of choke collars for training purposes. By the same token, there are those who feel these collars are very abusive in nature. In order to make an educated decision concerning the different types of choke collars, one must study the plethora of information available.
A choke collar is made out of chain and is also referred to as slip collar. This style of dog collar is typically constructed of chain, cord, webbing or cloth. In spite of the name, a chain choke collar was never meant to choke a dog – its purpose is to compress the brachial nerve, similar to pinching the funny bone. This type of dog collar should be used for training purposes only and must fit properly on the dog’s neck, so as to not cause harm to the dog’s throat.
Because of the design of this type collar one should never leave it on an unattended animal because it can snag on an object and unintentionally strangle a dog. Many Trainers recommend that a choke chain or slip collar should only be utilized for training reasons or when walking your dog when on a leash. This sort of collar was not designed for puppies under six months old. In addition, if your pet is constantly tugging against the chain collar, then different type of choke collars should be substituted.
Variations of choke collars include the half check collars and Martingale collars and are considered by many dog trainers to be gentler than those constructed of chain. These collars were originally designed for sight hounds which have necks larger than their heads such as Greyhounds, Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, Bolzoi and Saluki’s. Since their inception, half check and Martingale collars have become well-liked by many breeders for the reason that it prevents any dog from backing out of a standard collar.
Half check collars, also referred to as half choke collars, are typically constructed of leather or nylon webbing in combination with chain. Martingale collars are constructed entirely of nylon webbing. Both of these unique dog collars have a dual-loop design that functions by contracting on the dog’s neck when it is attempting to pull its head from the collar, but will release again when the tension decreases. The distinct, restrictive closure of the half check collar and the Martingale collar averts it from becoming too tight.
These specially designed collars are also suitable for controlling dogs when using a leash. Despite being properly trained, dogs can be stubborn when confined to leash. These collars are a practical tool in keeping the dog and its owner out of harm’s way. Choke collars are particularly helpful for owners of large and giant breeds that are occasionally to strong for their owners.
One advantage the Martingale collar has over its half check collar counterpart is that it will not get tangled in the dog’s hair on account that it is made of webbing as apposed to chain. Most owners that are advocates of these collars emphasize that the fit and location of these collars are crucial when ensuring these collars do not cause harm to your dog. Directions on proper fit and location are simple to locate at any pet store, browsing on the internet or from a local dog trainer.
Although the debate may continue among dog owners over whether or not to use a choke collar, there is an abundance of information available for one to make their own well-informed conclusion. In the end, it is a choice that will have to be made by the individual dog owner for the benefit and protection of their own dogs.
Although there are two sides to this debate there are simple guidelines to ensure that your dog is safe while using a choke collar. Jim Witt encourages you to visit Country Brook Design for more information and purchasing stylish Martingale Collars.
